One of those players is 2016 top pick safety Karl Joseph. Joseph has not lived up to his draft position expectations as the 14th overall selection. Maybe it’s a little unfair to say that considering the pick was regarded as a reach. Joseph was viewed as a prospect more likely to be drafted on day two due to a serious injury he suffered his final season at West Virginia. The early part of Joseph’s career has been underwhelming to say the least, he has struggled to find his role with the defense. His lack of size makes him a liability when covering tight ends.Time and time again larger more physical tight ends are able to post him up and have their way with him.Early last season, Joseph saw only 11 defensive snaps through week six due in part to injury. His name was being kicked around as a potential trade chip as the deadline approached midseason. The Raiders opted to hold onto Joseph and slowly the snap count began to increase.By week 10 he was the full time starter the remainder of the year.In the final eight games of the year he registered 42 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception. In fact, by the end of the season Joseph showed major improvements in all facets of his game according to pro football focus.Fast forward a couple months, and now the Raiders have just selected Johnathan Abram in the first round of the draft.Abram’s appears in many ways to be a bigger version of Joseph with a similar skill set.Gruden obviously has strong feelings for Abram, selected to wear the prestigious jersey number 24 tells you the coach has high expectations for the rookie.I had the opportunity to interview Raiders insider for NBC sports bay area, Scott Bair for my podcast, “Just Pod Baby.”When asked how Abram and Joseph will coexist Kolton Miller Jersey ,“It’s possible that they don’t,” said Bair.“I asked Mike Mayock specifically about whether the Raiders were going to exercise Karl Joseph’s fifth year option, they have to do that in early May.And he didn’t say yes and he didn’t say no, he just said that is a conversation that he is going to have with Karl.So I don’t think it’s a guarantee that the fifth year option gets exercised.” Earlier this week, ESPN projected the Raiders to part ways with Joseph. The deadline to pick up fifth year options on the 2016 draft class is Friday, so we should know more about his future at the end of the week.Raiders Pre-Season Week 2 Film Session: Chris Warren rumbles again Another pre-season and another un-drafted free agent running back turning heads in Silver and Black. This year, the recipient of the early hype is Chris Warren III.So far he leads the NFL in rushing, albeit through 2 pre-season games. Warren flashed huge potential in college but for some reason was asked to play tight end at University of Texas during his junior and final season.Warren finished his game against the Rams with 110 yards rushing and a score on 18 carries. He was the only skill player producing consistent yards last Saturday since both Connor Cook and EJ Manuel struggled to get the passing game in rhythm. Here are a few things Warren did well and some things he can improve upon.Running Behind His PadsThis is the lone power blocking scheme in this breakdown. Warren does a great job of pressing the line of scrimmage and even though he is met by a linebacker after 2 yards, he lowers his shoulder and drives his feet for another 4 yards.Say hello to zone blocking ladies and gentlemen. This time it’s a lead outside zone run. The tight end, Pharoah Brown is attempting to execute a “reach block” that will allow Warren a clear path around the edge. But the Rams defensive end beats Brown inside forcing Warren to take an even further path outside.Warren does a great job here chopping his feet, squaring his shoulders P.J. Hall Jersey , and getting the first down in spite of the blocking in front of him.Shout out to Feliciano, Aboushi, and Silberman for driving their men back 5 yards. Here is another zone play without the lead fullback, but this time it’s inside zone.Notice the QB bootleg freezing the unblocked edge rushers.Warren steps through an arm tackle, collides with the safety, keeps his feet churning for a few extra yards after contact yet again. This time it’s a team effort. Warren presses the line of scrimmage in a hurry and cuts back when he sees the hole open.A lot of times ball carriers will keep dancing here but Warren knows he needs to run with power. He lowers his shoulder into the linebacker after 3 yards and keeps his feet pumping. His teammates pile on and turn the run into a 9 yard gain.Taking Advantage of Great BlockingThere are times when all a ball carrier has to do is execute the play call.In this case Warren gets awesome blocking and is able to climb quickly into the second level. The safety grabbing his legs at the last second prevents him from finishing off this run like he should.Warren’s Touchdown run was more of a stroll into the endzone. He might as well have walked in.Feliciano gets away with a pretty blatant holding here, electing to simply tackle the nose guard.Warren probably wishes he had this one back.A tractor trailer size hole opens up in front of him and Warren gets caught dancing in front of the safety. He needs to finish these runs off in a violent fashion.Warren shows off his speed in this toss around the outside. Not often can a 240+ pound back get to the second level this quickly.Warren tries to stiff arm the safety but is too late.He should force this safety to make a business decision next time.A common theme here is Warren failing to finish off his runs like a power back should.Pass ProtectionWarren had an up and down day in pass protection. There were too many instances of Warren releasing on a route when Cook or Manuel were under pressure.Without knowing the play call or the coaching points it’s tough to say if that’s a mistake on Warren or not.In the above play Warren comes across the formation to double the left defensive end.You see Warren hesitate for a moment before striking number 49. This is a negative rep for that reason and the defensive end is able to get off the block and hurry Manuel late in the down. Here’s a better rep where Warren executes a chip block on number 50.This is a technique designed to help the offensive lineman and make the pass rusher think twice about who is coming to block him on a given play. His size should make him a pass protection stud but Gruden said after the game that Warren “has to get better without the ball in his hands.” Pass protection is a must for every runningback, especially when you have a franchise QB in the backfield.Takeaways+ Warren has posted great production thoughout 2 pre-season games, enough to lock him in at a RB roster spot.+ Warren has NFL pedigree (father Chris Warren II played for 10 seasons in the NFL as a runningback) and boasts a frame that is built to last.+ Warren has sneaky speed and the ability to lower his shoulder and drive for extra yards after contact. - He can do a better job of finishing off runs in the open field.- Pass protection is his biggest area for growth.

In the past, the traditional slot receiver was smaller, quicker and ran shorter routes. Today, some of the best receivers in the NFL run a high percentage of their routes from the slot - and these are not just your traditional quick outs, move rub-crossers and stick routes...your seeing a full route tree, including verticals. The Redskins recently selected wide receiver Kelvin Harmon, a 6’2 1/2” 221 pound bully out of N.C. State in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. Harmon was extremely productive during his last two seasons in college, accumulating 1017 and 1186 receiving yards respectively before deciding to forgo his senior season and enter the draft. A less-than-stellar 40 time caused him to slip to the sixth round, where the Redskins decided to pounce. Harmon is known for his physical presence, solid hands, double moves, ability to track over-the-shoulder throws, and 50/50 ball ability. Perfect X receiver in today’s NFL right?...not so fast. Two current NFL comparisons I have made to Harmon are Chargers receiver Keenan Allen and Saints stud Michael Thomas. Both entered the league with below average deep speed - Allen was in the low 4.7 in his 40, while Thomas ran a 4.57 at the combine. Both have become successful in the NFL largely due to the work they do out of the slot. The NFL is all about mismatches. Nickle defensive backs, the ones who primarily line up in the slot, tend to be smaller and quicker. You also see safeties drop down into the slot, sometimes playing a robber role underneath to try and contain the short routes. It’s here where these new, bigger-bodied slot receiver are winning.Although Keenan Allen and Michael Thomas don’t have elite quickness or speed Jimmy Moreland Washington Redskins Jersey , they win against smaller DB’s with physicality, body positioning and good route running in and out of breaks. If you try to cover either with a safety - they are a mismatch from the get-go. The traditional slot receiver, as mentioned above, ran a lot of quick outs, pivot routes, stick routes and quick crossers. Today, we are seeing these big slots run slants, seams, shallow crosses, corners, deep outs, deep ins and curls - all routes where they are able to use their size and catch radius to create mismatches against smaller defensive backs. Below is a list of some bigger-bodied receivers who saw at least 50 percent of their targets from the slot in 2018:Keenan AllenMichael ThomasLarry FitzgeraldAdam ThielenTyler BoydJuJu Smith-SchusterMohamed SanuCan Kelvin Harmon become the next great NFL slot receiver? When he was drafted, fans immediately dubbed Harmon as the team’s new X receiver due to his physical presence. I feel, due to his lack of true deep speed, that much like some of the players listed above, he can excel from the slot. Harmon attacks smaller defensive back with his bully-mentality. He understand body positioning, often playing like a power forward in basketball. He will fight for the ball in traffic with his strong hands, and on out-routes, he understands how to catch the ball away from his body while keeping his feet in bounds. Although Harmon didn’t play in the slot in college, below you can see an example of how he sets his route up and plays the sideline well. I can imagine him doing this from the hash on an inside-outside combo route. Here you see Harmon operating as the inside receiver on this out-and-up in the redzone. This is one of the rare times you see him inside in college, but you can see how effective he can be. The thought of Terry McLaurin and Paul Richardson with their speed on the outside, and Jordan Reed and Kelvin Harmon underneath, could be a scary combination for opposing defenses. Add in the diversity of Trey Quinn and size and playmaking ability of Cam Sims, and the Redskins just may have something here to help new quarterback Dwayne Haskins be successful in this offense for years to come.
two players at practice due to injury on Wednesday Ramon Foster Jersey , fans might be encouraged to hear that James Conner was not one of them. Having been placed in concussion protocols after the game against the Carolina Panthers, the return of Conner as a full participant in training for the first practice session of the week bodes well for his inclusion on Sunday. When speaking to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com after training, the young running back sounded pleased with his progress since being forced from the game in Week 10.Although Ben Roethlisberger was given his usual day of on Wednesday, the absence of both Stephon Tuitt and Marcus Gilbert was due to the injuries they are battling. Gilbert continues to struggle with a knee injury that has caused him to miss the last three games in a row and he will be in danger of missing another if he cannot practice fully on Thursday or Friday. Even though Tuitt was sidelined by a hyperextended elbow, there seems to be a level of optimism among the coaching staff that he may be able to practice later in the week. Having missed the game last week Vince Williams Jersey , it is can only be assumed that Dan McCullers is in good health considering he was not included on the injury report at all. By comparison, the Jacksonville Jaguars appear to have several injury concerns of their own heading into the game. 3-2In games where the Steelers have scored more than 50 points, they have an all-time record of 3–2 the following week. of experience hiring head coaches. Too much experience hiring coaches. So much experience hiring coaches that this could be his last experience hiring coaches.Elway has whittled his choices down to two: Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak and Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. The thinking is that Elway is leaning Munchak. However Brandon McManus Jersey , Fangio could save the day.Per a league source, Fangio’s burning desire to finally become a head coach has made him willing to let Elway hand pick the coaching staff. Elway wants Gary Kubiak to run the offense. That’s more likely if it’s Fangio. It also makes it less likely that the offensive coordinator will be pilfered by another team, since Kubiak has retired from serving as a head coach, for health reasons. However it plays out Todd Davis Jersey , the stakes have never been higher for Elway. Only three years after winning a Super Bowl, he has presided over the worst back-to-back seasons for the Broncos since 1971-72. Another sub-.500 season could be his last. Good news for Von Miller: He has more sacks before turning 30 than all-time sacks leader Bruce Smith had before turning 30.Bad news for Von Miller: Bruce Smith had 92 sacks before turning 30 . . . and 108 after turning 30. Which means that Miller will need 103 sacks in his 30s to break Smith’s record.“It’s encouraging,” Miller told Peter King of NBCSports.com regarding whether it’s doable. “It’s definitely encouraging. Coach Fangio — we’ve got new leadership here — and says, ‘You now Shane Ray Jersey , don’t make any proclamations.’ And I’m all for that. I’ve got a great coach here, one of the best coaches that I’ve ever had in my life. . . . He’s an outside linebackers guy. He’s coached a lot of great ones. I want to be his greatest product yet.”Miller said that he’s adjusting on little things that will elevate his game. Fangio previously has said that by doing the little things correctly Miller will indeed get better. However it turns out, Miller has plenty of sacks that he still needs to get in order to get past Smith. If Fangio can help Miller get better, the chances of that happening get greater.
and his first NFL relief appearance a success. After handing off a two-touchdown lead midway through the fourth quarter in his spectacular NFL debut Demarcus Walker Jersey , the rookie first-round QB returned to rescue the Kansas City Chiefs , driving them 67 yards in 11 plays to beatDenver 27-24 on Harrison Butker’s 30-yard field goal as time expired. ”You always have to be ready,” Mahomes said. ”All season long, it’s kind of been the same thing – you have to make sure you’re ready to go at any moment.”Article continues below ... The Chiefs (10-6) will go back to starting Alex Smith for their wild-card game Saturday against Tennessee, even more secure in the knowledge they have a clutch backup in Mahomes, the former Texas Tech standout they selected with the 10th overall pick in April. ”He played fantastic,” said Kareem Hunt, who secured the league’s rushing title by scurrying 35 yards for a touchdown on his only carry. Smith and several other starters rested because Kansas City was locked into the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs, allowing coach Andy Reid to essentially use this regular season finale as a playoff bye. ”It was good to get a couple bumps and bruises healed up,” Reid said. Von Miller said he was impressed by Mahomes, whom he expects to see plenty of in the coming years. ”He’s great,” Miller said. ”He’s the quarterback of the future for the Chiefs.” The Broncos (5-11) head into another offseason still searching for their quarterback of the future – and maybe their fourth coach in five years after Vance Joseph oversaw a team that lost eight times by double digits and oversaw an eight-game skid, their longest in 50 years. Joseph, who inherited what was seemingly the best situation of the half dozen new head coaches in 2017 only to finish with the worst record of the bunch, will meet with GM John Elway on Monday to discuss his future. ”I want to be here,” Joseph said. ”It’s a football team that’s close. We have to make some adjustments in some places, but our football team all year has not stopped working. That was fun to see, even tonight. It’s been a hard year but everyone kept fighting. I want to be here to fix it.” Mahomes became the first quarterback drafted by the Chiefs to win a game for them since Todd Blackledge in 1987. He threw for 284 yards on 24-of-35 passing with no touchdowns and an interception. Mahomes thought his day was won at 24-10 and Reid sent in Tyler Bray, who handed off late to fullback Anthony Sherman, who carried 14 times for 40 yards after coming into the game with six career carries in seven NFL seasons. Linebacker Zaire Anderson scooped up the loose ball and scored from 38 yards out to pull Denver to 24-17. After the Chiefs punted, Lynch added a 6-yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas on fourth down with 2:53 left, and Brandon McManus’ extra point tied it at 24. Mahomes took off his jacket, put on his helmet and returned to the game with 2:45 left. He was promptly sacked by DeMarcus Walker but recovered nicely to drive K.C. to victory. Mahomes made a good first impression , connecting with tight end Demetrius Harris for 51 yards on Kansas City’s opening drive. Then, he handed off to Hunt, who dashed for a 35-yard touchdown less than a minute into the game. TOP RUSHER: Hunt secured the NFL rushing title over Todd Gurley II and Le’Veon Bell, both of whom were inactive Sunday. Hunt wasn’t planning on playing, either, but the Chiefs were thin at running back and dressed him. ”Honestly, it wasn’t on my radar because I wasn’t supposed to play,” said Hunt, who finished with 1,327 yards and joined the Bengals’ Paul Robinson Garett Bolles Jersey , who led the AFL in rushing in 1968, as the only rookie rushing champs not selected in the first round of the common draft era – the last 50 years. C.J. Anderson gained 61 yards to top 1,000 for the first time in his five-year with the Broncos. ”It was tough,” said Anderson, who carried 18 times. LYNCH SO-SO: Broncos QB Paxton Lynch was 21 of 31 for 254 yards with two TDs, two interceptions and was sacked five times. He threw an interception late in the first half and was sacked three times in a five-snap span in the third quarter, losing the ball on one of them with linebacker Ramik Wilson scooping it up and scoring from 11 yards out. It was 17 degrees at kickoff, the fifth-coldest home start in Broncos history and the coldest temperature for any of Lynch’s starts, in the pros or at Memphis. INJURIES: Chiefs backup PR De’Anthony Thomas broke his right leg and CB Phillip Gaines was knocked out with an elbow injury just before halftime. Broncos S Will Parks (shoulder stinger) left in the fourth quarter. New,38commentsThe Devins are gone. Now what? 3 & Out: What do the Broncos do at linebacker? Elway passed on Bush. It’s a long fall to LB3. Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY SportsOne of the unsung aspects of Elway’s trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers is the fact that the Denver Broncos had an opportunity to take the consensus second best linebacker in this Draft Class and passed. Where do they go from here? 1st & 10: Who is the top linebacker you still have on your board?Joe: I got Blake Cashman as LB3, with Mack Wilson from Alabama close behind. Both give the second level range and could start early on. I think Cashman is a trash collector and is quick to diagnose which is what separated him for me. Wilson is coming out a year early, I think. If he had stayed with the Tide another year he could have been a first rounder. As it is, he declined down the stretch last year and needs to get better at fighting through blocks.Hart: When the Broncos opted to move down from the tenth selection, they did that knowing it may be a while before they even select a linebacker. Why? Because the drop off in talent from Devin White and Devin Bush is incredibly steep.Hawaii’s Jahlani Tavai is my highest-rated overall linebacker on the board at #62 overall. I love his versatility and the fact he played all over their defense but he is still recovering from a shoulder injury that ended his season. It also made him miss most of the draft workout process. I believe he is an ascending player with the tools to be a formidable force as a pro and would be fine with the Broncos selecting him somewhere in the second round based on need, though it would be a reach at either of the two selections they currently have in the round.2nd & 6: Do you think Elway will use one of his second round selections on a linebacker? Hart: Only if they believe that a linebacker is the best player available at their selection and I’m not so sure they do. With those two picks, they can’t afford to reach on a player. Too much value is available on the board in my eyes. They are in prime position to get a highly-coveted talent at multiple positions outside of linebacker. Considering Fangio’s track record of finding guys later on who can contribute, I am operating under the assumption they will wait until the third round or later to address that need.Joe: I sure hope not. I had Cashman as one of my favorite players for 71, but with the way the 1st round went 41 will be a gold mine if Denver’s stays there. 52 could be too. Moves like L.J. Collier, Daniel Jones, Tytus Howard, and Dexter Lawrence going so high pushes some serious talent down the board. I do think Cashman could be a day 1 starter over Josey Jewell in the Fangio D. He may be the last backer I can confidently speak for there. I think Wilson will need to adjust to the physicality of the NFL game, though he’s more adept in space. 3rd and 3: Would it shock you if the Broncos don’t wind up with a new starting linebacker from this class?Joe: It wouldn’t. I know Broncos Country has believed it to be a pressing need for months now and even I would like a better coverage player next to Todd Davis. I just also think that the Fangio scheme will help hide the backers limitations some. Denver won’t be running so much man coverage anymore, and will instead move to more Cover 3 and Cover 4 with some match zones on the perimeter that do look like man. Inside it will be a lot more spot drops and that should help hide Davis and Jewell’s sub-par speed. Both are heady players that do a great job anticipating, they just can’t keep up at times.Hart: I’d honestly be shocked if they didn’t address the position. That being said, I don’t think there are many linebackers left on the board who are plug-and-play starters. I think Tavai and say someone like Germaine Pratt will take at least a year to learn the ropes before they are ready to be starters at a high level. Too much from the mental side (diagnosing plays, learning the defense, etc.) has to be done before that can happen.4th and 1: Do you have any sleeper backers you think the Broncos could grab?Hart: Tyrel Dodson out of Texas A&M and Sione Takitaki from Brigham Young are names to keep your eye on. I think both will find homes early on the draft’s third day and have the potential to be starters at the next level. I also believe Bobby Okereke from Stanford would fit Fangio’s defense.Joe: Ben Burr-Kirven. If Denver is specifically looking for a role player to help in nickel personnel there’s noone left in the draft that is better. He may always be locked into such a role because he’s undersized, but could surprise. He’s slippery off of blocks, fast as a water bug and always around the ball. I have him as a 4th round talent on my adjusted board but he’ll probably slide into round 5 or later. I also like Bobby Okereke as a developmental prospect, though he’s not the same kind of second nature chaos player Burr-Kirven is.
Cheap Benny Snell Jersey , but if you think the news surrounding the black-and-gold is over — think again. For the drama-filled Steelers, things are just heating up, and this is where the daily links article comes in. You might have missed some key news, and we fill you in and give you the latest, and sometimes greatest, news surrounding the Steelers.Today in the Black-and-gold links article we take a look at the question of whether the Steelers are the most underachieving team in the last decade. I mean, think about the talent which has gone through the doors at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in the last 10 years. And think about how little they have to show for it. After all, this team doesn’t just play for a good record, they play for championships — and they haven’t been able to capture one of those sine 2009.Let’s get to the news:Tim Benz: Steelers should be better than Mike Tomlin has made themBy: Tim Benz, Pittsburgh Tribune-ReviewArguing about whether the Pittsburgh Steelers should keep Mike Tomlin is more volatile than any political discussion I can fathom.Give me a nice, quiet conversation about border walls, health care, gun control, government shutdowns or Hillary’s emails any day. Those are far less contentious topics.Sides have been drawn. Heels are dug in. You are pro-Tomlin or anti-Tomlin.There is no gray area anymore. I tried to live in it for a while.Like a decade or so.Frankly, there should be a middle ground. Because Tomlin has a resume worth defending: two Super Bowl trips with one victory, six division titles, 12 years without a losing season. However, over the last decade Jack Lambert Jersey , that resume also includes almost as many seasons without the playoffs (four) as with them (six). Only three of those 10 seasons have featured at least one postseason win. Most disturbingly, those seven seasons without a playoff victory have come during a stretch of time when the Steelers have had the NFL’s most coveted possession: a Hall of Fame quarterback. That’s not to mention scores of other talented players over the years.Just look at this failed 2018 season. A team good enough to be 7-2-1 beyond the halfway point blew numerous leads, occasionally against inferior teams. As a result, it’s sitting at home, eliminated short of the playoffs. It’s tough to fault the construction of the roster or the individual accomplishments of its players. The team boasts six Pro Bowlers, which doesn’t even include:鈥?The team MVP: JuJu Smith-Schuster鈥?The 5,000-yard passer: Ben Roethlisberger鈥?The guy many consider to be the best defensive player on the roster: Joe Haden鈥?The linebacker with the eighth-best sack total in the league: T.J. WattWhen talent of that caliber fails to win, a lot of the blame should fall on the coach. And none of that is to mention the embarrassment bestowed upon the organization with his failure to manage his ego-driven stars. Many of those key players generating negative headlines and distractions on a weekly basis — Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and Le’Veon Bell — received only the slightest of discipline or public admonishment from Tomlin. In fact, he was often their biggest defender. Why stop at the roster? Extend criticism of off-field behavior to his past and present assistant coaches, such as Todd Haley and Joey Porter. For all those reasons, I’m now in favor of a change. I think the Steelers should be better. And I’m phrasing that way for a reason. I truly believe that. The Steelers SHOULD ... BE ... BETTER.In many ways. What would be fantasy impact of Steelers trading Antonio Brown?By: Tim Benz, Pittsburgh Tribune-ReviewWhen it comes to all this Antonio Brown controversy, as JuJu Smith-Schuster might say, let’s get to the real important stuff: Fantasy Football. If Brown gets traded, there will be some major waves in the fantasy sports world. So, during our weekly fantasy sports podcast with Jeff Erickson of Rotowire Jack Ham Jersey , we dive into the potential fantasy impact of a Brown trade.LISTEN: What would be the fantasy impact of Antonio Brown trade? Also, we talk about that ripple effect would go for Smith-Schuster and Ben Roethlisberger. We then give you some NFL postseason fantasy league advice. OK, then what?By: Chris Carter, DKPittsburghSportsWell, I planned on writing about the Steelers’ inadequacies and beginning the postseason evaluation process to see what was better and worse about the 2018 season. There’s a lot that went into the team’s regression from 13-3 to 9-6-1, so I’ve been excited to dive into that. And then, Antonio Brown happened. So that will have to wait a bit. You’ve read Dejan Kovacevic’s column on Mike Tomlin’s accountability, or lack thereof, and Dale Lolley’s account of the challenge the Steelers face with the crossroads Brown has created. But let’s face the reality of what his departure might mean for the future of the offense.First, let’s look at how central Brown has been to the Steelers’ offense over the years. This season, he became the first NFL wide receiver with six consecutive seasons with 100 or more receptions, and arguably has the best six year run of any wide receiver in NFL history: 686 receptions for 9,145 yards and 67 touchdowns. It’s worth noting that 2018 was the first time Brown accounted for less than 25 percent of the Steelers’ overall targets since 2012.Since Brown became the No. 1 receiver for the Steelers in 2013, the player that got the closest to the number of targets he received in any season was Emmanuel Sanders back in 2013, when he was targeted 113 times compared to Brown’s 167.But in 2018, JuJu Smith-Schuster accounted for 166 targets while Brown accounted for 168. That difference helped Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers’ offense become less predictable and open up other opportunities. If Brown is not part of the team in 2018 and not replaced by another superstar wide receiver, it will change how defenses plan for the Steelers and take away Roethlisberger’s biggest advantages against opposing defenses. You only have to look at the last two games of this season to see the difference in the offense with and without Brown.(To read more JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey , click the link in the headline...) With two third round picks, one being from the Antonio Brown trade, the team spent their first on a little-known player from Toledo named Diontae Johnson. While fans puzzled over the selection, wide receiver coach Darryl Drake gushed over the player the Steelers selected with their second pick in the draft process. This is what Drake had to say at the introductory press conference after the selection was made:Talk about some high praise from a very accomplished coach who has been around the likes of Antonio Brown. JuJu Smith-Schuster and Larry Fitzgerald. But for Johnson, his overall excitement started the day he met Drake, and when he visited the Steelers on an official pre-draft visit. “I love the place. I like the energy from Coach Tomlin and the general manager around the building. I just felt like I was already on the team once I stepped foot in the building.” Johnson said in a conference call the day he was drafted.Johnson feels he can be a great weapon for the Steelers, considering he doesn’t just play special teams as a return man, but can play inside and outside within the offense.“Playing both really because I can play both in and out. Me being able to do that gives me another weapon on offense.” Johnson added. To say Johnson is excited to not just be drafted, but to be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, might be one gigantic understatement. He realizes what he is now a part of, and seems eager to get his start at the NFL level.Check out the video below where Johnson sits down with Steelers.com’s Missi Matthews to talk about his NFL Draft experience, and getting to work with the Steelers.
that could contribute to the Redskins"Clelin Ferrell Samaje Perine Jersey , EDGESchool: Clemson | Conference: ACCCollege Experience: Junior | Age: 21Height / Weight: 6-4 / 264 lbsProjected Draft Status: Top-20NFL Comparison: Robert Quinn (Pk#10)Collegiate Statistics Pro Football Focus’ Advanced Stats:According to Pro Football Weekly’s Marcus Mosher, no stat for college defensive linemen is more predictive of NFL success than tackles for loss. Other than undersized Sutton Smith, Clelin Ferrell’s 37.5 TFL over the past two seasons leads the edge class.Player Overview Ferrell came to Clemson as the sixth defensive end high school recruit in the nation (by Rivals) despite the fact that he did not play his senior season due to a torn ACL, and a hand injury forced him to red-shirt his first season. The following season, Ferrell replaced the departed Shaq Lawson in 2016 very well, sharing the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year award with teammate Dexter Lawrence. Most services voted Ferrell to their second-team All-American teams in 2017 fueling speculation that he would declare for the NFL as a Redshirt Sophomore. At the time he announced he was returning for his senior season, Ferrell was ranked as the eighth player overall for the 2018 NFL draft by Kiper, while McShay ranked him as his #18 prospect. In his final season, Ferrell notched a career-high 11.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss that helped earn him First-Team All-American honors. Additionally, he won the 2018 ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year, and the Ted Hendricks Award, awarded to the nation’s top defensive end.Overall, Ferrell leaves Clemson as a three-year starter, who helped Clemson win a pair of National Championships in 2018 and 2016. Athletic Traits Ferrell opted to sit out at Clemson’s Pro Day due to a toe injury. At the NFL Combine, Ferrell tested slightly below average in the agility drills, but has yet to run a 40 yard dash. Thus far, he did post a 4.40 short shuttle, 7.26 3-cone, 26 bench press reps, and a 9-foot-6 broad jump. The Film See Highlights Of His NFL Combine WorkoutsSee more of his film.StrengthsPrototypical frame with long arms and violent hands. Battle-tested, three year starter, who played in the college football playoffs each season, with good film against quality offensive lineman, such as Alabama’s Jonah Williams.Disruptive pass-rusher, who times the snap well, has an explosive first snap, showed advanced technique, and a diverse repertoire of pass rush moves. Plays with good leverage, is strong at the point of attack, and sets the edge very well against the run.A play-maker, who also batted down four passes, forced three fumbles and recovered one in 2018.Experience dropping back into coverage in zone-blitzes. Since the 2016 season, Ferrell has been very durable in college and started every game (44) of his career at Clemson.WeaknessesQuestionable athleticism and pure speed (has not yet run a 40). Doesn’t have the flexibility to turn the corner and flatten his trajectory to the quarterback. Too often, he gets too far upfield, taking himself out of the play. How much did he benefit from the talent around him?Clemson’s Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables’ defense is structured to let his defensive ends get upfield and make plays behind the line-of-scrimmage Montae Nicholson Jersey , padding statistics. What Others Are SayingTony Pauline- “He’s a good pass rusher, he can play in space, he can drop off the LOS, you can use him out of a three point stance, you can stand him over tackle...I think when it is all said and done, he’s going to be a top five pick, wouldn’t surprise me if hops into the top three selections of the draft.”Midway though the 2018 season, WalterFootball talked to scouts who said they thought Ferrell would go in the mid- to late first round and that “teams do not view him as an explosive edge rusher in the mold of a Myles Garrett or Von Miller.”Lance Zierlein- “Highly productive 4-3 defensive end with prototypical size, length and strength to offer early help against both the run and pass. Playing next to NFL talent in all three years certainly made things easier for Ferrell, but his edge-setting and rush plan improvements are self-made. His rush can be leggy and gradual and might not get home as often in the pros, but NFL coaching might further unleash his physical traits and turn him into a star. Ferrell is a complete defender and steady talent who could start early for a 4-3 stop unit.”Billy Marshall - “Ferrell is typically the first player off the ball due to his snap reaction. However, he struggles to bend the edge. In order to win on the edge, he has to dip underneath the offensive tackle’s shoulder and take less steps. The reason for his less than satisfactory bend likely has to do with his ankle flexion not being comparable to other speed rushers.”How He Would Fit On The RedskinsRecent mocks are trending toward Ferrell still being on the board when the Redskins are on the clock and some have him lasting well into the 20s. Ferrell is actually a pretty similar prospect to Nick Bosa. While neither are as athletic as Rashan Gary or Montez Sweat, each are a better technicians. Also similar to Bosa, Ferrell wins with heavy hands, appears to have a pass-rush plan, understands angles and body positioning, and gives second effort if his first move is neutralized. Ferrell is an EDGE that is battle-tested, has been highly productive, and looks somewhat scheme diverse. Somewhat of a limited athlete, he has been lauded for his first step quickness, yet ridiculed for relatively slow 2nd and 3rd step. While Ferrell is experienced dropping into coverage, doing so plays into his weaknesses instead of his strengths. Inmy opinion, Ferrell would be a great replacement, and in time, an upgrade over the since departed Preston Smith. Complete a mega trade for Antonio Brown, and sign Tyrell Williams, JJ Nelson, and Ryan Grant to rebuild the receiving corps.Things are looking much better from an offensive line and wide receiver stand point but there is plenty of help needed on the offensive side of the ball.Jared Cook left town to sign with the New Orleans Saints, leaving a major void at tight end.Even with the signing of Isaiah Crowell the running back room still lacks talent and it’s unknown at this point if Marshawn Lynch is planning to play the final season in Oakland. Kelechi Osemele was traded to the Jets to free up $10 million in cap space and although Denzelle Good was brought back as a possible replacement for Osemele, guard is another position that should be upgraded in the draft. So with all these needs that still remain on offense, the question is which position is the bigger need?Tight endLooking at the list of tight ends currently on the roster it’s hard to imagine prioritizing running back or guard ahead in terms of need.Luke Willson, Lee Smith, Derek Carrier, Darren Waller, and Paul Butler are what currently make up the tight end options. Not exactly a world beater group of tight ends.Combined those five players caught only 36 passes for 302 yards last season.Last week at the annual league meetings https://www.raiderslockerroom.com/authentic-derek-carr-jersey , Jon Gruden threw support the way of Darren Waller. who came on late last season after being claimed off the Ravens’ practice squad.“This Darren Waller is very interesting, we’re going to give him a chance of a lifetime,” said Gruden. “So, if you’re listening out Darren there, let’s go brother.” Waller could be in line for a bigger role in 2019.Running backMuch like the tight end group there is one very interesting option in Chris Warren III, who was stashed on the injured reserve last season and a bunch of ok guys.Jalen Richard had a break out year in 2018 but he is nothing more than a third down back and receiver out of the backfield.DeAndre Washington was buried on the depth chart last season and was a healthy scratch some weeks. As previously mentioned, Isaiah Crowell was signed to a one year prove-it deal.Crowell brings experience as a workhorse back but there is a reason he didn’t last long with the Browns and Jets.Crowell has never had a season of 1,000 yards rushing. We all know Gruden loves to pound the rock, and mentioned last week he is looking for a three down back that can do it all.Currently the Raiders do not have that guy on the roster.GuardIf there is one area of weakness along the line it’s at guard.Gabe Jackson will man one side and it appears Denzelle Good is the leader in the clubhouse for the spot opposite of Jackson.Good was brought in late in the season and started the final three games of the year at right guard replacing Jackson was lost to injury. He played well in his limited time with the Raiders and because of that they rewarded him with a one-year contract extension.Whether Good is the answer to start at guard remains to be seen. After Good, the depth is, well, bad.Jordan Devey, Chaz Green, and Denver Kirkland.Injuries took a toll on the offensive line last season so adding a guard through the draft is imperative.
Tom Jackson Jersey , 8 losers in a shameful Denver loss You know the season is lost when you lose to the hapless New York Jets. That is what happened to the Denver Broncos on Sunday in a 34-16 defeat, and if the Jets are bad, what does that make Denver? The Broncos (2-3) might be worse than they were a season ago, and they were bad in 2017. Winners The Jets Unlike the Broncos, New York moved up in the NFL Draft and got its franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold. It’s fitting the Jets just beat Denver. The future looks bright for Gang Green. The same cannot be said about Broncos Country.Phillip Lindsay The Broncos rookie running back was pretty much the only player who shined on offense. He is fun to watch and will play a big role for this franchise in the foreseeable future.Adam Gotsis Hey, you have to try and find the positives at this point, and at least Denver’s defense created a turnover. Not only that, the offense turned that into a touchdown. At least the start was good. Too bad it derailed shortly after that.Losers Vance Joseph The time has come to fire him and move on. It’s easy to lose track of the number of embarrassing games he’s overseen as head coach, but Sunday against the Jets is the most recent. No more. Joe WoodsNo more. As is the case for Joseph, the time has come to move on. At least Wade Phillips will be in the building next Sunday to completely destroy the franchise that did him wrong.Garett Bolles Or is it Garett Holds? Either way, he leads the NFL in holding penalties and the issues that plagued him in his rookie season haven’t been fixed. The “bust” talk is only going to grow louder and louder. Denver’s offensive line Despite the success this unit has had in run blocking, it is putrid in pass protection. This unit has been bad over the Broncos’ three-game losing streak and now the Los Angeles Rams are up next. Case Keenum Keenum is a liability at this point, and it’s time to consider making the switch to Chad Kelly. Keenum has proven his success with the Minnesota Vikings last season was a fluke. Bradley Roby Holy shit Dennis Smith Jersey , was he torched on Sunday. What else is there to say? He wasn’t alone, since the Frequent Flyer Zone was open for business against the Jets. Broncos run defenseHoly shit, was this unit torched on Sunday. What else is there to say? John Elway It’s been said that Denver’s legend has no Plan B. Never has that been more true since Peyton Manning retired. It’s clear at this point that Elway has no clue what he’s doing. And his franchise just shamed itself by being annihilated by a bad team that has a franchise quarterback. Whoops. However, the past two drafts indicate that Elway and his staff have evolved and finally found a winning formula to acquire collegiate talent. The evolution of John Elway’s NFL Draft strategyPhoto by Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesAfter years of questionable drafts littered with more misses than hits, John Elway seems to have finally found a winning formula with respect to the NFL Draft. In his tenure as general manager, Elway has relied on strong free agent classes to bolster the team’s ability to compete. His success in that regard has been remarkable, but his draft day endeavors and subsequent results have been tenuous at best. Though over the last two drafts, the Broncos’ draft strategy has evolved and most importantly, changed for the better.A major emphasis has been placed on drafting players who are leaders on and off the field. High character prospects that possess remarkable football intelligence and the desire to be the best. As I’ve wrote numerous times Terrell Davis Jersey , it’s often the mental approach to the game that separates the good from the great. In order to successfully navigate the enormous rigors of the National Football League successfully, you need to be diligent and have incredible mental toughness. Nothing can be taken for granted. Every challenge should be seen as an opportunity to become the best player you can be. You have to put your best foot forward every single day, whether it is on the practice field or in the film room. Every selection over the past two drafts have been players who embody the aforementioned principles. Players who would run through a brick wall to get to their hopeful destination without hesitation. Players who aspire for dominance. Players who want to be Denver Broncos. I could wax poetic about this topic forever, but let’s now turn the page and focus on Elway’s masterful maneuvers in this year’s draft.Instead of standing pat at ten overall, Elway navigated the first-round draft landscape beautifully by trading down and selecting dynamic tight end Noah Fant. The selection of Fant provides the Broncos with a player who will contribute immediately and provide the offense with something it has been missing for years — a formidable threat at the position. Broncos Country should have little doubt that he will be a game-changer for years to come.It wasn’t just the selection itself that is praise-worthy, but the fact Elway was able to secure significant draft capital by adding a second-round and 2020 third-round pick in the process. In one smooth phone call, the Broncos maximized their ability to address other key needs on the roster, while adding a premium pick to target future needs. Without that trade down, what transpired on the draft’s second day could have never come to fruition. With Mike Munchak in the fold and the departure of Matt Paradis in free agency, it was obvious the Broncos were going to be on the pursuit for an offensive lineman early. At the 41st pick, the franchise snagged Kansas State tackle Dalton Risner. The Colorado kid from Wiggins is coming home and will be a plug-and-play starter as a rookie at right guard.Just when you thought the Broncos would have to wait a bit longer to make their third pick of the draft, Elway shocked the world by trading a fourth and sixth round selection to obtain the quarterback he had coveted throughout the entire draft process, Missouri’s Drew Lock. While Lock has certainly needs mechanical refinement and development with respect to processing defenses and pressure Steve Atwater Jersey , he has all the tools you can’t teach and most importantly, a great mentor in Joe Flacco. He is a perfect fit for what the Broncos want to accomplish and has the talent to be the franchise’s quarterback of the future. To round out their day two haul, the Broncos were fortunate to obtain Ohio State defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones. Jones has the ability to play outside and kick inside in sub-packages and took a huge step forward in his last year with the Buckeyes. Considering Shelby Harris, Adam Gotsis and Derek Wolfe are in contract years, it was a smart move to make immediately and for the long-term.On the third day of the draft, the Broncos added depth at edge rusher and wide receiver by selecting Oregon standout Justin Hollins and Colorado’s Juwann Winfree. Hollins played under Jim Leavitt with the Ducks, who coached alongside Vic Fangio in San Francisco. Winfree shares the same agent as Phillip Lindsay and appears to have a lot of untapped potential. Last but not least, Denver was able to sign two high-profile undrafted free agents in Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien and Nevada edge defender Malik Reed. Truth be told, it will take several more years to know exactly how the past two drafts will actually panned out. However, it truly looks as if Elway and the Broncos’ draft fortunes are changing with a new strategy in place. With a revamped offense and improve defense, as well as holding a treasure trove of picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, the current and future state of the Broncos is strong. It’s time to put the rest of the league on notice — the Broncos are officially back and ready to compete now and from now on.
in 1983 and missed out on the glory days of the 1970’s Jack Butler Jersey , there is little doubt in my mind who was the greatest player I ever saw wearing the Black and Gold live in my 35+ years following the team. Drafted with the 10th pick of the 1987 NFL Draft, Hall of Fame cornerback Rod Woodson was not only the best defensive back of his era, but arguably one of the greatest cornerbacks of all-time. His departure in 1997 as a free agent after being lowballed by Pittsburgh devastated me as fan and seeing him play in the uniforms of the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and Oakland Raiders was heartbreaking to watch.Appearing as a guest on Undeniable with Dan Patrick on the A&T Audience Network last week, Woodson shared several stories about his life growing up and his time in the NFL. Revealing details of his time with the Steelers and the final phone call that caused him to turn his back on Pittsburgh Joe Greene Jersey , the interview is well worth a listen for all Pittsburgh fans. Conflicts about money would bookend Woodson’s career with the Steelers, starting with a 94-day holdout over his rookie contract and ending with a dispute over an extension in 1997. The Hall of Fame cornerback reveals how much he learned in Pittsburgh. While also sharing tales that would have social media up in arms if they happened today. Some might want to gloss over the parts about his years with the Baltimore Ravens, perhaps the most upsetting part of his career from a Steelers fan perspective and the only team he would earn a Super Bowl ring with. The full interview is 50 minutes long and can be found here.Steelers vs. Falcons Week 5: Time, TV Schedule and game information The Pittsburgh Steelers will take on a team with almost as many problems as they have this Sunday, set to face the 1-3 Atlanta Falcons at Heinz Field in Week 5. Both teams havestruggled to stop teams from putting points on the board in 2018 Terrell Edmunds Jersey , while their offenses have been somewhat similar statistically, even if Atlanta has been scoring with more frequency.Historically, Pittsburgh has owned the Falcons in these matchups, boasting a 13-2-1 dating back to 1966. But with these two teams only meeting once every for years, this record has little bearing on the upcoming game beyond bragging rights for the fans. In something of a strange quirk of these contest as of late Maurkice Pouncey Jersey , three of the last four games have gone to overtime, with the Falcons responsible for the last tie Pittsburgh was involved in back in 2002 prior to their Week 1 result.Just the thought of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley lining up against the Steelers’ secondary is the stuff of nightmares, and it is hard to be confident that Pittsburgh will record their first home win of the year. As bad as they have looked at times this season, the Falcons have been far more competitive in their games and it could be another long afternoon for the Steelers on Sunday.Week 5:Game: Atlanta Falcons (1-3) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2-1)Date: Sunday, October 7Kickoff: 13.00 p.m. ETVenue: Heinz FieldWeather: Live weather updateWatch:TV Channel:FOX Cameron Heyward Jersey , broadcast locally on WPGH-TV, with Chris Myers and Daryl Johnston as commentators and Laura Okmin the sideline reporter.
